Lesson Plan 1: Introduction to Chess

Introduction & Hook

Begin by asking: "Who has heard of chess?" Share that chess is over 1,500 years old and is played by millions of people around the world. Show the chess pieces and ask students to guess what game they're from.

Exploring the Chessboard

• Show the chessboard and count the squares together (8x8 = 64)
• Point out the alternating light and dark squares
• Introduce files (a-h) as "vertical streets" and ranks (1-8) as "horizontal avenues"
• Practice naming squares: "Can you find square e4? What about h1?"

Meet the Pieces

Introduce each piece with a fun character description:

• King: The most important piece - if he's captured, the game is over! (Wears a cross on his crown)
• Queen: The most powerful piece - she can move in any direction! (Wears a crown with points)
• Rook: Looks like a castle tower - moves in straight lines
• Bishop: Has a pointed hat - moves diagonally
• Knight: The horse - the only piece that can jump over others!
• Pawn: The little soldiers - there are 8 of them

Setting Up the Board

• Demonstrate proper board orientation (white square on right)
• Show the starting position: "Rooks in corners, then knights, then bishops"
• Remember: "Queen on her own color"
• Pawns fill the second rank
• Have students practice setting up with partners

Closing & Review

Quick review questions:

• How many squares are on a chessboard?
• Which piece wears a cross on its crown?
• Which piece can jump over other pieces?
