Chess Endgames
Convert your advantages into wins. Learn essential endgame techniques every chess player must know.
Basic Checkmates
Every chess player must know these fundamental checkmates.
King & Queen
The most common checkmate pattern. Use the queen to restrict the enemy king while your king helps deliver mate.
King & Rook
Drive the enemy king to the edge of the board using the "box" technique with your rook.
Two Rooks
The "ladder" or "lawnmower" mate. Alternate rook checks to force the king to the edge.
Two Bishops
Use two bishops to create a diagonal barrier and force the king to the corner.
King & Pawn Endgames
The Opposition
When kings face each other with one square between them, the player NOT to move has the opposition and advantage.
- Direct opposition: Kings on same file or rank
- Diagonal opposition: Kings on same diagonal
- Key to winning king & pawn vs king
The Square of the Pawn
A simple rule to know if a king can catch a passed pawn. Draw an imaginary square from the pawn to its promotion square.
- If the king is inside the square, it catches the pawn
- If outside, the pawn promotes
- Remember: include the square the pawn is on
Essential Endgame Concepts
Activate Your King
In the endgame, the king becomes a fighting piece! Bring it to the center and use it to support your pawns and attack enemy pawns.
Create Passed Pawns
A passed pawn (no enemy pawns blocking it) is your biggest weapon. Push it toward promotion!
Don't Rush
Endgames require precision. Take your time, calculate carefully, and don't make hasty moves that throw away the win.
